With Saturday’s pivotal ACC title against Florida State coming up this weekend, Clemson athletics has taken extra measures to ensure one of college football’s greatest traditions remains unscathed.
Howard’s Rock, the iconic statue players rub before coming down The Hill into the stadium, has been placed in a brand new protective case for safekeeping.
This case, unlike the last one, which was broken in the summer, has metal around the glass, making it tougher for vandals to crack.
In June, 18-year-old Micah Rogers was arrested for allegedly jumping the Memorial Stadium fence, breaking the Rock’s protective case and chipping off a piece of the statue. Rogers’ father, Michael Rogers, and 17-year-old Alden James Gainey also were arrested back in August for their connection with the vandalism.
The chipped piece of rock was never recovered.
Since 1966, the Tigers have rubbed Howard’s Rock for luck before every home game. A Clemson alum brought the rock from Death Valley, Calif., to Death Valley, S.C. and it was named after famed Clemson coach Frank Howard, the winningest coach in school history.
