Dodgers bringing back manager Don Mattingly in 2014

Fans of the Los Angeles Dodgers: Do you like having Don Mattingly around to manage the club? No matter that the Dodgers trail the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series? Good, because he is coming back in 2014. Jon Heyman of CBS Sports and Ken Gurnick of MLB.com have the scoop, that the Dodgers are picking up the club option on Mattingly's contract.

Although the Dodgers do not plan to make a formal announcement, club chairman Mark Walter told SI.com that Mattingly had "done a good job."

Mattingly signed a three-year contract, with a $1.4 million option for 2014, to replace Joe Torre after the 2010 season. This is the first year the Dodgers have reached the postseason under Mattingly, whose only previous managing experience was during one stint in the Arizona Fall League.

While Mattingly has not distinguished himself as a tactician, the players seem to like him and he's gotten the best out of them, particularly during a 42-8 stretch that brought the Dodgers from last place to first in the NL West. Most managers push the same buttons at the same times anyway, so how Mattingly handles the personalities of the clubhouse over the 162-game grind (and into the playoffs) is the most important thing. And he seems to be good at that. Good enough to dig the Dodgers out of the hole they're in after falling 4-2 to the Cardinals on Tuesday night in Game 4 of the NLCS? We shall see.
