The Big Ten Network has some fantastic original programming, especially BTN’s “The Journey,” a show that gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at both Big Ten football and basketball.
The Journey crew had their stable of cameras in Beaver Stadium on Saturday night for Penn State’s comeback victory over Michigan, and for the week leading up to the game, they were focusing on PSU’s All-Big Ten guard John Urschel, a three-year starter.
Urschel’s story has been well-documented. He graduated with a 4.0 in mathematics in three years. Last year he completed a master’s degree in math and taught a trigonometry course, and is now working on his second master’s degree in math education while teaching another class.
His diaper habits as a child were less-documented. Until now.
As a youngster, Urschel had an affinity for Barney, and Urschel’s mother tried to use the Barney diapers as a way to potty-train her son.
“She bought me diapers with Barney’s face on them,” Urschel said. “She said, ‘If you go to the bathroom in your diaper, you’re going to the bathroom on Barney’s face. And you don’t want to do that.’ So, I’m like, ‘No, I don’t want to do that, I wouldn’t dare.’”
In an early sign of genius, instead of dirtying Barney’s face, a young Urschel figured out a way around that.
“Under Barney’s diaper, I put another normal diaper on and went to the bathroom in that diaper. So, I guess, I decided I had to go to the bathroom, took my diaper off, went and found where the generic diapers were, put that one on, and then put Barney’s diaper on.”
Brilliant!
