Pep Guardiola won’t be happy until Bayern’s opponents cry tears of blood

Bayern Munich beat Viktoria Plzen 5-0 in their first Champions League group-stage meeting. Bayern had 77 percent of possession. They had 18 shots on target to Plzen's zero and not a single Bayern player was shown a yellow card. Last season's treble winners remain undefeated since losing the DFB Super Cup to Borussia Dortmund to start the season. And yet, manager Pep Guardiola still sees room for improvement.

After Bayern's very thorough victory, Guardiola said (via the club's Twitter account):

"We played well, but not perfect. We must continue to improve..."

What more does the man want? To actually make Bayern's opponents cry? To make them bleed out on the pitch and just before they lose consciousness, admit that Bayern are just too good and that if they could do it all over again, they would've become accountants instead of footballers? The man is merciless. But to top Jupp Heynckes' Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB Pokal winning campaign last season, he has to be.

One area where Bayern could improve appears to be interpersonal relationships. The one blemish on the Plzen win was Arjen Robben's refusal to take a penalty in the 25th minute. Instead, Franck Ribery took it and scored the first of his two goals on the night. But it was still a touchy subject and seemed to be a lingering wound for Robben.

On Saturday, Robben hade been angered after being told not to take a penalty in the 4-1 Bundesliga win over Mainz 05 with Guardiola instead choosing Thomas Mueller, who was on the bench at the time on Wednesday.

"I do not want to talk about it," a visibly irritated Robben told reporters when asked about the incident. "Let's not talk about it, let's drop it.

"We had a very good game and 5-0 is a great result but we could have done better if we really want to be very critical."

Guardiola confirmed Robben had been his choice for the spot kick but did not comment further.

Instead of passing drills at training this week, they might want to do some trust falls. (After covering Robben in protective gear to ensure he doesn't injure himself, of course.)
