Report: Carlos Peguero’s wife allegedly uses Felix Hernandez’s wife’s debit card

Felix Hernandez and Carlos Peguero (USA Today) There’s a certain camaraderie that exists between baseball wives and girlfriends. After all, no one understands their unpredictable situation and lifestyle better than they do, not even their baseball playing significant others. But it appears in the case of Maria Peguero, wife of Seattle Mariners outfielder Carlos Peguero, the bond of trust and understanding was abused. According to a Seattle Times reports, she’s accused of using a debit card belonging to the wife of pitcher Felix Hernandez to make nearly $180,000 in online purchases.

Maria Jacqueline Peguero is charged in U.S. District Court in Tacoma with three counts of wire fraud, which carries a possible penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Maria Peguero has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is free on bond and under the supervision of federal community Pre-Trial Services, according to the court docket.

Randy Adamack, the Mariners’ senior vice president for communications, said team officials are “aware of this pending police matter, but are not in a position to discuss it further.”

According to the report, Peguero allegedly made 60 transactions with Sandra Hernandez's debit card in total. She was eventually traced and tracked down through an email that connected to her Twitter account. On Twitter, she was spotted wearing some of the items that were purchased with the card, so the investigation proved to be an easy one for authorities.

It turns out Peguero has a checkered past, as well. According to court documents, she was arrested in 2010 for allegedly shoplifting a number of items from a local TJ Maxx store in Edinburg, Texas.

For his part, Carlos Peguero denied knowing what she was doing. Though one would think he had to wonder where some of the new items were coming from if it wasn't coming out of his paycheck. Just a real strange story all around. At this point, it's probably to assume Maria Peguero, proven guilty or not, won't be invited to sit in wives section at Safeco Field next season if her husband is still a member of the team.
