Grambling State interim coach removed from duties, but there’s still unrest amongst the football team

Grambling interim football coach George Ragsdale was fired and reassigned on Thursday, but that may not be enough for Grambling's players.

After walking out on a team meeting Tuesday and boycotting practice on Wednesday, Dennis Winston was named as the team's new coach. But at a demonstration on campus Thursday with over 100 people, player Naquan Smith said that the team still isn't satisfied.

“We felt like we’ve been mistreated,” Smith said after he addressed the crowd. “The administration is finally addressing some of the facilities issues, but we felt like it should have been done a long time ago.“We felt there is a lack of leadership with the administration. We had a personal issue with (interim football coach George Ragsdale) and demanded for him to go. We want (president Frank Pogue) to go.”

According to the paper, Smith said the team was "prepared to play" in its visit to Jackson State on Saturday, but it wasn't a guarantee that they'd make the trip.

“We want to know that the program is going to be run the right way,” Smith told the Times.

There was no practice Thursday after 10 players showed up. The Times said that the campus rally was organized via Twitter and text messages.

Grambling State, a historically black college in Louisiana, is 0-7 and the players met Tuesday with Pogue, Ragsdale and others. They were unhappy with a number of issues, including transportation to Kansas City and Indianapolis (the team bused there from Louisiana), facilities, and the firing of former Super Bowl winning quarterback Doug Williams after an 0-2 start.

That Tuesday meeting went so poorly that players walked out. A Wednesday morning workout was also shortened after a player was kicked out, leading to the practice boycott.
