Trevor Gillies sucker punches Jarkko Ruutu after Ruutu refuses fight (Video)

Remember Trevor Gillies? The former New York Islanders forward had an infamous NHL run, including a 9-game suspension for his attack on then-Pittsburgh Penguins forward Eric Tangradi and followed by a 10-game suspension for a hit on Cal Clutterbuck.

Remember Jarkko Ruutu, the incredible pest who played 11 season in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks?

Gillies is now with HIFK Helsinki in SM-liga. Ruutu is now with Jokerit Helsinki. The teams faced off on Friday night, and it’s good to see neither of them have changed much since leaving the NHL.

That’s Gillies, sucker punching Ruutu after Ruutu skates over and confronts him, probably talking about the weather in Jyväskylä or something.

Why the punch? Because Gillies said Ruutu refused to fight him.

Gillies told Ilta-Sanomat that it “maybe got a little carried away” on the play. A video showed Gillies and Ruutu jawing during a faceoff, with Gillies seeming to ask Ruutu to fight, and bumping each other during a shift. That eventually led to the incident, in which Ruutu was dropped like the Islanders dropped Trevor Gillies.

Gillies said he asked Ruutu to fight off the faceoff, but that he declined and continued to yap away. “Emotions got the best of me,” he said. “It is what it is.

“Jarkko is a great player, but there’s a line that can’t be crossed,” said Gillies. “He’s overboard with it.”
