Wade Phillips will coach on Sunday, two days after his legendary father Bum Phillips died

Wade Phillips will coach with a heavy heart on Sunday.

His father, legendary Oilers and Saints coach Bum Phillips, died on Friday at 90 years old.

Wade Phillips followed in his father's footsteps and became a football coach. As such, he'll be on the sideline Sunday as the Texans' defensive coordinator when they play at Kansas City.

“I was blessed to have him as a father and coach,” Wade Phillips told the Houston Chronicle late Friday night. “I got to coach with him for 11 years. He taught me everything I know about coaching. He taught me right and wrong. He taught me to enjoy life.”

Bum Phillips was famous for his defensive innovations, the huge cowboys hats he wore on the sideline and his Oilers teams that won 10 or more games four of his six seasons as head coach from 1975-80, but could never quite get past the Steelers in the AFC to make the Super Bowl.

Bum Phillips also coached for five years in New Orleans. Even though he hadn't been a head coach in the NFL since 1985, he was always fondly remembered for his enormous personality and fun Oilers teams.

“You know, Dad enlightened everybody around him,” Wade Phillips told the Chronicle. “He had this special knack for making people feel good about themselves.”
