The thing about playing in your own arena is that you get quite familiar with the boards. We've seen it for many years in various NHL rinks, like Joe Louis Arena. The home team understands how they play and use it to their advantage.
This wasn't the case for Sibir of the KHL on Saturday. After getting out to a 2-0 lead in the second period, Barys clawed back and tied the game with a pair of goals in a 1:42 span. The second goal, coming on a delayed penalty, came thanks to to the boards of Ice Sports Palace Sibir:
Vitali Yeremeyev became the third goalie in KHL history to be credited with scoring a goal after it was deemed he was the last Barys player to touch the puck.
That's some tough luck. You go from watching your shot fly just wide of your opponent's net to banking off the boards, touching no one and then winding up in the back of your own net. Sibir defenseman Igor Ozhiganov (No. 92) has never taken a luckier, but unfortunate shot in his life. Maybe he should try his hand at Plinko next?
And yes, the hockey gods weren't on the side of Sibir Saturday as Nigel Dawes' (hey, remember him?) second of the game late in the third period would give Barys the 3-2 win.
