Mostly NBA Notes: Talking Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and a look around the league

Before the season started, I said Anthony Davis will finish as a top-five fantasy player. I say this not to brag (well, maybe a little bit), but I’m more frustrated that he ended up on zero of my fantasy teams. Also, I might have been a little conservative with my prediction, as Davis currently is the No. 1 fantasy player by a significant margin. The Pelicans are outscoring opponents by six points per 100 possessions with Davis on the court this season. And with him off it, opponents are outscoring New Orleans by 11 points per 100 possessions. Yes it’s early, but this is a 20-year-old who’s only going to get better. I doubt there’s ever been a player who has the ability to record a combination of 11.5 rpg, 2.0 spg, 4.3 bpg AND an 87.5 free throw percentage (on eight attempts per game!), even over any six-game span. Moreover, despite the big increase in playing time (37:42 mpg), the Unibrow is committing only 1.5 tpg. Chris Paul and Kevin Love have been going nuts, but if a draft were held today, I’d take Davis with the No. 3 pick. He’s a certified monster.

Here’s a dunk by a college player who appears to have above average ups.

Here’s James Young making one of the craziest shots into his own basket you’ll ever see.

This Dunk was pretty sick, but Jordan Weethee’s reaction to the camera afterward makes it more noteworthy.

The Kings have lost five games in a row after winning their season opener, but Sacramento is just happy to have its team intact, and DeMarcus Cousins has given the franchise some hope. Boogie has averaged a career-high 23.5 points on a career-best 49.1 percent shooting (despite getting benched and seeing just 18:13 minutes during one of his six games). Cousins led the NBA in fouls his first two seasons in the league and is actually getting a career-high 4.2 fouls per game this year and maturity remains something that could improve, although to be fair, it’s a positive he didn’t punch Dennis Schroder after the rookie did this to him. Over his last two games, Cousins has averaged 34.0 points and 10.5 rebounds, and his 2.2 spg this season are the most (other than an unusable DeJuan Blair) among all those who are center eligible. Cousins is still just 23 years old, and while the defensive lapses (especially when he’s complaining about fouls on the other end of the floor) will remain infuriating to Kings fans, his fantasy owners look to have themselves a top-25 player.

Here’s a Russian Driver Calmly Crashing Into a River.

Here’s a Russian Doing Work on a Swing.

Here’s Cousin Sal Tricking Trick or Treaters.

Quick Hits: Damian Lillard had an awful game Saturday, shooting 1-of-15 from the field while tying his career-low scoring four points. He committed just one turnover, and Portland won by 11 points in Sacramento anyway, so don’t let one dud take away just how terrific the beginning to the sophomore guard’s season has been. In fact, Lillard became the first player to ever record 100 points, 25 rebounds, 25 assists and 20 three-pointers in his team’s first five games…With Tyson Chandler out 4-to-6 weeks, Andrea Bargnani is going to get all the minutes he can handle as the Knicks’ new starting center. While it’s safe not to expect his first game in the role, which resulted in 25 points, eight boards, three assists, three treys and five blocks, to be a regularity, especially with his FG attempts likely to go down with J.R. Smith returning, he’s clearly a must-add in fantasy leagues. Few have seen their fantasy value upgraded more over the season’s first two weeks, at least as long as Chandler is sidelined…Jimmy Butler averaged 14.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.8 steals, 0.6 bpg and 1.1 3pt while shooting 45.7 percent from the floor and committing just 1.5 tpg during his 20 starts last season. Despite remaining in the starting five this year, he’s failed to reach double digits in points in any of his past three games, although to be fair he’s averaging 2.2 spg and 1.0 bpg, so it hasn’t been all bad. Clearly, this Bulls team will need some time to work out their new lineup, especially with Derrick Rose (32.0 FG%, 5.0 tpg) working through some clear rust.

Here’s a Train in India that offers free drinks (and showers).

Come for the “bare bum electric fence challenge” but stay for the entirely unexpected finish (NSFW: language and bare bum).

Here’s someone flying with a jetpack over Mount Fuji.

Quick Hits Part Deux: J.J. Redick has really enjoyed starting (and playing in this Clippers system) this season, as he’s averaged a career-high 17.6 ppg and 1.0 spg to go along with 2.1 3pt. He’s currently the No. 22 ranked fantasy player, thanks also to his fantastic free throw shooting. It’s obviously a small sample, but considering he’s on a new team and now locked in as a starter, Redick also isn’t necessarily a sell-high. He’s someone who likely went late in drafts who will end up being a difference maker…Another player changing teams whose fantasy value has taken an opposite turn is Kevin Garnett, who hasn’t reached double digits in scoring in any of his first six games with the Nets, averaging only 6.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg and 1.8 apg. KG is shooting just 32.1 percent from the floor and is committing the second-most fouls per game (3.0) during his 19-year career despite seeing by far the fewest mpg (27:48) in his career, which could be a sign his decline is for real. He’ll get better and shouldn’t be dropped or anything, but this is one start to the year that should be considered a red flag moving forward…If you’re in a deep league with a bunch of bench spots, Toney Douglas is an interesting stash, as he’d be plenty valuable should the injury-prone Stephen Curry go down. And Curry owners should consider him a handcuff, like Ben Tate to Arian Foster in fantasy football terms…Sticking with the Warriors, Andre Iguodala is somehow shooting 60.3 percent from the field and 44.8 percent from downtown and just 47.8 percent from the free-throw line. That’s an odd combination to say the least, especially from a small forward who’s also getting 2.1 spg. Iggy is also dishing passes like this while being the recipient of alley oops like this.

Quick Hits Part Tres: After reuniting with his old coach Rick Adelman, Kevin Martin has thrived, averaging 23.3 ppg, 1.3 spg and 2.8 3pt while hitting 90.2 percent of his free throws. It’s unrealistic to expect Martin to maintain his current top-10 fantasy value, but he’s back starting for the first time in a few years and has finished in the top-35 in four of the past six years, so some big decline shouldn’t be expected. He’ll go down as a steal considering where he was typically drafted…Following up an impressive preseason performance, Vitor Faverani got 12.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg and 4.5 bpg over the first two games this season, but he’s averaged just 3.6 ppg since then, bottoming out Saturday, when he didn’t start and saw less than three minutes off the bench. Ugh. I pity those who spent FAAB on him during the first period (which I did (heavily) in a deep keeper league)…Meanwhile, Steven Adams (whom I own in said keeper league), has shown some signs recently (this year’s No. 12 pick scored 17 points with 10 rebounds, three assists, one steal and three blocks in Detroit on Friday). He’s an intriguing talent with upside who’s now at least on the fantasy radar…Aaron Afflalo is averaging 19.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.0 spg and 2.3 3pt, which are career highs in all categories. He’s clearly ready to make the leap, and he’s “only” been the No. 53 ranked fantasy player so far thanks to him shooting more than 10.0 percent worse at the line than he previously has throughout his career. Victor Oladipo will become a bigger part of the offense moving forward, but Jameer Nelson is also a trade candidate, and it’s clear Afflalo is Orlando’s No. 1 scoring option, which will likely continue even when Tobias Harris eventually returns.

Longread of the week: 20 Minutes at Rucker Park.

Quick Hits Part Four: In the battle between Sacramento point guards, the starter (Greivis Vasquez) is easily losing to the backup (Isaiah Thomas) over the Kings’ first six games. Vasquez finished with the third-most apg last season and the most total helpers in all of basketball, and while he hasn’t played poorly this year (3.6 assist:turnover ratio while shooting 46.3 percent from the field), Thomas has been on fire off the bench, scoring 18.0 ppg with 4.5 apg in just 27:30 mpg. It looks like a headache of a timeshare for fantasy owners moving forward…During his last start, Gerald Wallace played 27:33 minutes and didn’t attempt a single field goal or free throw. He’s seeing 30:30 mpg this season and is averaging 5.6 ppg (with a 51.7 FG%) on a team void of offensive options. He’s just 31 years old, but apparently his “Crash” nickname has caught up to him in a big way. Having said that, Brad Stevens sure looks like his coaching ability will translate into the NBA. It might not have been the smartest move in the franchise’s long-term outlook, but how did this Boston team win in Miami on Saturday night?

Alabama coach Nick Saban leapt into quarterback AJ McCarron’s arms following LSU win (Video)

If you think Alabama’s game against LSU was just another game for the Tide, think again.

The 38-17 victory was so exciting that Bama coach Nick Saban actually jumped into the arms of quarterback AJ McCarron. It was an awkward yet heartwarming moment that was also very hilarious since Saban is one of those coaches that rarely shows emotion.

But Alabama stays undefeated and is one step closer to its third national championship berth.

UCF receiver Breshad Perriman carted off after vicious hit (Video)

The new targeting rule has had its critics, but sometimes it’s absolutely the right call.

Such was the case for Houston cornerback Zach McMillian, who was ejected in the fourth quarter after hitting Central Florida receiver Breshad Perriman above the shoulders.

Perriman had just turned around after catching a pass across the middle from Blake Bortles when McMillian stuck him high and hit Perriman’s facemask with the back of his helmet.

Perriman fell to the ground – appeared to be knocked unconscious – and fumbled the ball. Trainers spent several minutes working on Perriman before putting him on a stretcher and ultimately taking him to the hospital as a precaution. Perriman did give the crowd the thumbs up as he was being carted off.

McMillian actually tried to return to the field in street clothes and was greeted by boos and garbage raining down from the UCF fans. Officials then asked him to go back to the locker room.

No matter how safe the NCAA tries to make the game, these types of plays still happen. And you can argue that it wasn’t helmet-to-helmet, but it was still a hit on a defenseless receiver. It’s just good that Perriman wasn’t more seriously injured.

Photo: A glimpse into Andrew McCutchen’s future thanks to Vernon Wells?

It's never a bad idea when players prepare for life after baseball. Even the perennial MVP candidates like Andrew McCutchen would be wise to have something lined up just in case life throws them a curveball in the dirt that they can't lay off of.

In fact, at first glance on Saturday, that's exactly what it looked like McCutchen was doing when New York Yankees outfielder Vernon Wells snapped and posted the following photo on Twitter.

From All-Star to Little League umpire? Is that really you Andrew McCutchen?

Not quite. McCutchen was actually spotted in downtown Pittsburgh on Saturday meeting and greeting fans. But it's almost too close to call without a little closer examination and Wells' 30 years down the road comment. Perhaps the gentlemen umpiring Wells' son's game is even McCutchen's doppelganger. He could certainly pass for him at a Halloween party, and may even have a good shot at eating dinner for free in Pittsburgh.

The look. The hair. The body type. It's all so uncanny that even McCutchen had to appreciate the photo.

It's actually quite hilarious. About the only thing that could be funnier is a David Ortiz lookalike standing out there with a clicker and umpire's shirt. Maybe somebody, somewhere, can make that happen.

What do you think? Are these keepers?

Wild sequence ends with Dayton’s Jordan Sibert drilling a game-winning 3-pointer

It took an acrobatic steal, a clever pass and a clutch shot for Dayton to turn a laborious season opener into an exhilarating 81-80 victory.

When Dayton's Khari Price leapt in the air to make a free safety-esque interception of IPFW's inbound pass in the final seconds of Saturday's game, the Flyers still needed two points to force overtime or three to go home a winner. Price made a lunging pass to Kyle Davis and Davis found Jordan Sibert spotted up on the left wing, enabling the Ohio State transfer to bury a last-second game-winning 3-pointer in his first game at Dayton.

Sibert's game winner capped a furious second half in which Dayton frittered away an 11-point lead, trailed by as many as seven and somehow won anyway. Dyshawn Pierre kept the Flyers competitive, scoring a game-high 24 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists in 33 minutes of action.

IPFW's loss shows the downside to fouling when up three points late in a game: It exposes you to possibilities worse than overtime.

The Mastodons decided to foul holding an 80-77 lead after a pair of Mo Evans free throws with just over nine seconds remaining. It seemed the strategy would work for IPFW when Price split a pair of free throws, but the errant pass changed all that and paved the way for Sibert's heroics.

Greg Cosell’s Look Ahead: Titans being smart with Jake Locker’s progress

The Titans were practically starting from scratch with quarterback Jake Locker this season.

As a rookie, the Titans tried to put Locker on the shelf all year and let him learn, although he was pressed into some action. Then in his second year, he missed significant time due to injury.

Locker was very inexperienced coming into this season, even though it was his third year. So the Titans built a simple passing offense that allows Locker to progress as a quarterback.

The conventional way to do that is through the run game. All the play-action passes that work off the run game define reads much quicker for a quarterback. You’d like to start there.

Reads off run or play action are what we call "either or" reads. When it’s first down and 10 and you have two tight ends, you can pretty much expect to get some kind of eight in the box look. That means you’re getting a single-high safety. There are specific routes that work against that with "either or" clearly defined reads. And you’ll have maximum protection on many of those plays so he’s not under duress when he throws. That’s how you help him.

For example, the Titans will run some post/cross combination routes. When Locker fakes a handoff and turns his head around, he finds the single-high safety. Did the safety jump the crossing route? Then go to the post. Did the safety stay deep? Hit the crossing route. It's simple stuff. That’s what you’re trying to build. And they’re in process of building. Titans offnesive coordinator Dowell Loggains has done a great job with it.

You’d think with the receivers the Titans have that you’d put Locker in shotgun and spread it out. But then you see more blitzes and pressures. That can derail your offense and harm your young quarterback's progress.

Locker needs things defined. You have to remove the gray areas for him by limiting his progressions. Maybe next year, after another full offseason, you can take the next step with him, because he does have talent. Right now, they’re doing what’s best for him. And in the overall scheme of their team, which is 4-4 and in the playoff hunt, it’s working.

Brady's big day

Against the Steelers last week, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was as sharp as he’s been all season. He made some throws that were big-time throws. His arm looked live and strong. He had great rhythm, excellent balance, great pocket movement, all of it.

Having Danny Amendola and Rob Gronkowski both in the lineup obviously helps. The Steelers told us how important Amendola is because they put their best cornerback, Ike Taylor, on him in the slot. Taylor doesn’t normally play the slot. The Steelers let us know how big of a factor Amendola is in the offense.

And Gronkowski changes how a defense plays. The Steelers had a double-team on Gronkowski with safeties Ryan Clark and Troy Polamalu in the first quarter, and Gronkowski broke to the outside against it, got open and made a great catch for a 34-yard gain. That’s a tough catch, especially against a double team, but that’s what he does.

The Patriots were well balanced, they had great multiplicity in formations and personnel, and Brady played well. That's how you get 610 yards against Pittsburgh.

Stacy emerges

I liked Rams rookie running back Zac Stacy coming out of college, and now that he is getting a chance he’s running exactly the same as he did at Vanderbilt. He’s tough, physical and low to the ground. He runs with great pad level, and has good short-area quickness. He’s not going to break long runs, and that’s fine. That’s not neccessary to be a solid, sustaining back in the NFL.

In some ways he’s a slightly smaller version of Washington's Alfred Morris. They’re both physical, and probably quicker than you think they are. Morris is bigger, but that’s what Stacy is.

In a passing league, can Stacy be your featured back? Absolutely. He has shown that the last few weeks.

Claude Giroux finally scores goal, draws controversial major from Oilers (Video)

Frustrations for Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux hit a season high this week, which is saying something considering the season he’s had.

Giroux started the season without a goal in his first 15 games, as the Flyers stumbled out to a 4-wins-in-15-games start that cost coach Peter Laviolette his job. This week, he left the media hanging after the Flyers’ 3-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils, drawing the ire of critics. (He’d face the scribes the next day after practice.)

The Flyer faced the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday afternoon and maybe, just maybe, the worst is behind Giroux. Because he luck changed a bit in their 4-2 victory.

First there was this “head shot” from Anton Belov that earned him a match penalty for targeting the noggin:

Remember, the revamped Rule 48 stats that “a hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable” will earn a match penalty.

But unless Giroux is some circus freak with his head growing out of his shoulder, it wasn’t the main point contact. Expect that match penalty to be rescinded.

The penalty helped lead to Giroux finally scoring a goal this season, during a 4-on-4 session following a Wayne Simmonds cross-checking penalty:

So there you go: Giroux finally ties Mike Smith and Cam Janssen in the race for the Rocket Richard.

And the Flyers, despite all of this, move to within four points of the No. 4 seed in the Metropolitan Division. The Southeast didn’t leave the NHL, it just changed its name.

Penn State’s Allen Robinson sets school record for receiving yards in a season in loss

Despite Penn State’s up and down season, junior receiver Allen Robinson has been having a record-setting year.

In the Nittany Lions’ 24-10 loss at Minnesota, Robinson set the Penn State single-season receiving record in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard pass from freshman Christian Hackenberg. The reception moved Robinson past Bobby Engram, who caught 63 passes for 1,084 yards in 1995.

Robinson now holds the school records for receiving yards and receptions in a season. As a sophomore last year, Robinson hauled in 77 catches, and he’s on pace to break that record again.

Robinson finished the game with seven catches for 63 yards to bring his season total to 73 catches for 1,106 yards and six touchdowns. He notably made a leaping 36-yard catch to help Penn State upset Michigan earlier in the year.

Robinson would have to return for his senior year to surpass Engram’s record for career receiving yards (3,026), but Robinson could potentially be a high-round NFL draft choice, so that will be something to monitor after the season.

California JV squad pulls off trick play of the year

Of all the wild trick plays that have been used in prep, youth and even collegiate football this year, none have been as bold as the one pulled off by a junior varsity quarterback from El Camino Real High (Woodland Hills, Calif.).

As uncovered by MaxPreps, the crafty signal caller you see in the video above is Jahlil Pinkett, who took a chance during a game against Cleveland High (Woodland Hills, Calif.). He set up underneath center, bent to take the snap and then stood up and began to walk toward the sideline, requesting a new football.

The defense apparently bought it.

From there it was smooth sailing, as Pinkett sprinted to pay dirt with his stunned opponents watching.

The play call was a clever one, but what really sold the deception was Pinkett himself, who was completely believable in his protestations about the condition of the ball. Perhaps there's a reason for that; Jahlil Pinkett is the nephew of actress Jada Pinkett-Smith.

Maybe Jahlil Smith has a future in Hollywood, too? We'll all have to wait until he's done fooling people on the football field first.

The Gators are playing Vanderbilt, a team they haven't lost to since 1988. The Gators are, at the moment, 4-4, 3-3 in the SEC, and very much in danger of losing to Vanderbilt. The Gators haven't had a losing record at any point in a season since 1992. Even a bowl bid isn't a certainty at this point. Perhaps the trash truck should've been saved for after the game.

Well, at least there won't be too many fans at the Swamp to witness if things go horribly wrong:

Cheer up, Gator fans. A win over Florida State would still make everything all right.

So, in summary: Unless you’re Stone Cold Steve Austin or Larry The Cable Guy, leave the damn sleeves on your hockey sweater. Although kudos for keeping it untucked, as per NHL regulations.

And here … we … go.

Via Stafturd, here is a Los Angeles Kings fan either paying homage to the impressive list of Kings who wore 37 – Jean-Sebastien Aubin, Paul DiPietro, Kip Brennan, Dan Currie, Gabe Gauthier, Denis Grebeshkov, Bob Kudelski, Mark Parrish, Jason Podollan and/or Patrice Tardif – or he’s the most obsessive compulsive eater of Mexican appetizers we’ve ever seen. Interesting Foul from Ravi Sidhu, who spotted this Montreal Canadiens Carey Price sweater transformed into Carey PriDe.

“Best part is that it's a D on red cloth velcroed on the jersey for easy removal when he wants to rock the Price jersey.”

Or, conversely, when he wants to hide the Price jersey after someone loses gold in Sochi.

NERD ALERT!

From Steve McNish:

“I saw this at one of the last games Jarome Iginla played in Calgary. Apparently it’s the ‘god mode’ cheat code in the game DOOM.”

That is going deeeeep down the nerd-gasm rabbit hole right there. We can only assume he didn’t have room on the nameplate for “Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right BA Start.”

Mike sends this one in:

“Bro, I've sent this before, maybe you didn't get it, but after seeing the Rangers ‘Devils Suck’ and ‘Maaaarty’ jerseys, PLEASE show this one! As a fellow Devil fan, I implore you!”

Done and done. It’s clever for sure, and it does make us miss those halcyon days of the “1940!” chant. But still a total, inferiority complex Foul.

Chris McNab sends in these from the Southern FOUL Mecca of Tampa Bay, in which two Lightning fans have inexplicably Frankenjersey’d their Vincent Lecavalier sweaters with that of Mikko Koivu of the Minnesota Wild, because … who the hell cares?

It’s a bit of a douche move from the dude to wear the jersey that at least makes some phonetic sense, while his lady is forced to wear a nameplate that looks a junior Jumble word scramble. Or a French baby trying to say “Peek-a-boo.”

Dr. Ronald Weihs saw this sweater at a Winnipeg Jets game:

“White tape over ‘Burmistrov’ and Tro left , then sharpie ‘uba’ for Trouba. To top it off, the jersey is a cheap Chinese counterfeit (can tell by # 8. It has no light blue cut out).”

Origin of purchase aside, this can be viewed as a Protest Jersey which falls under the Not-A-Foul category. Such as …

… this one spotted by Jimmy Nguyen at a San Jose Sharks game, in the Mecca of Fouls in the West. Very nice Dany Heatley to Tomas Hertl transition. From reader Brett:

“I saw this guy a couple years ago at a Minnesota Wild game. ‘Beevahlikka 69’. Shockingly he was just as obnoxious and douchey as you can imagine.”

This road, we’re not going down.

And finally …

Erin Stinson brings us this Matt Cooke tribute from a Minnesota Wild fan, unless of course she’s suggesting he should be sent down to Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

That’s a fun little spelling lesson there. What else does ‘C’ stand for, Marc Savard?

(Yeah, we know: Reformed player, ancient history, yadda yadda…)

French sports minister calls Brazilian Ronaldo ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ at embassy event

Speaking at an event promoting the 2014 World Cup hosted at the Brazilian embassy, French sports minister Valerie Fourneyron confused Brazilian Ronaldo with Cristiano Ronaldo — the younger Portuguese star named after Ronald Reagan. Adding to the embarrassment was the fact that the Ronaldo with two World Cup winner's medals and two Ballon d'Or awards was standing right next to her when she did it.

Her goof-up was immediately met by murmurs from the crowd and she corrected herself while the ever affable Ronaldo quietly smiled beside her. Fourneyron continued on with her remarks, but you could tell that all Ronaldo was thinking was, "This is what happens when you've been retired for two long years. Everyone forgets."

Phil Mickelson: ‘I want to be an Olympic athlete’

Do not talk to Alex Steen; Caps extend Chimera; on scoring droughts (Puck Headlines)

Here are your Puck Headlines: a glorious collection of news and views collected from the greatest blogosphere in sports and the few, the proud, the mainstream hockey media.

• I don't remember Pavel Datsyuk being a human spider, but thinking about it, it does make a ton of sense. Guess I need to pay more attention. [Dmitry Chesnokov]

• Do not talk to Alex Steen about all the goals he's scoring. HE DOES NOT WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT. Ken Hitchcock: "Alex hates talking about this. I mean, he HATES it." [STL Today]

• Just a few days after being named the NHL's third star of the week, Jason Chimera has signed an extension with the Washington Capitals. Two years, $4 million. [Capitals]

Evander Kane missed Wednesday's Jets game. There was nothing wrong with him. "I felt healthy enough to play. My definition of a healthy scratch is a healthy player not playing. That was my interpretation." [Ken Wiebe]

• What happened to Claude Giroux, and when did it happen? [Flyers Nation]

• Speaking of Giroux, it's worth noting that scoring droughts happen to everyone. Take a look at the best goal-scorers in hockey and how long they've gone without a goal in their careers. [SB Nation]

• Are these the pads Henrik Lundqvist will be wearing for the Rangers' stadium games? [SNY Rangers]

• The problem with Steven Stamkos's incredible goal-scoring ability is that it masks what a complete player he's become. Knock it off, Stamkos. Let people see the real you.[Tampa Bay Times]

• USHL player Dylan Chanter, who suffered a seizure after a fight, returns to the lineup this weekend. He might fight again: ""I don't know how soon. If it happens, it happens. I'm not going to go out there looking for a fight. … (But) if the opportunity presents itself and tempers flare, it will happen." [USA Today]

• The Toronto Maple Leafs have loaded up their top line. JVR, Kessel, and Lupul should be fun to watch. [The Globe & Mail]

• You know who was pretty good and who won basically everything and who is incredibly deserving of his Hockey Hall of Fame induction? Scott Niedermayer. [ESPN]

• Brett Hull on why Brendan Shanahan belongs in the Hockey Hall of Fame. [NHL]

• Sean McIndoe remembers Don Cherry's greatest prediction, when he said Toronto's Rob Ford would be the greatest mayor ever (you left-wing kooks). In a way, he was so, so right. [Grantland]

• A good way to deal with the Avalanche's questionable even-strength corsi is to compare them to the Flames. Then you'll feel a lot better about things. [Delicious Icing]

• On Jay McClement, the Maple Leafs' behind-the-scenes guy. [Maple Leafs Central]

• Looking to put some mustard on your mustard? Try Dupuis Dijon, as in Pascal Dupuis. [PHT]

• Wherein Joe Thornton gets triple-teamed. [Fear the Fin]

• Taylor Fedun has scored a goal in each of his first two NHL games. What a story this guy is. [Oilers Nation]

• After allowing a goal on the first shot of the game five times this season, the Canucks go above and beyond, surrendering a goal before the first shot. What an insane, fluky play Joe Thornton's goal was:

Sepp Blatter suggests Iran, UAE as co-hosts for 2022 World Cup with Qatar

Semyon Varlamov’s alleged victim: ‘He has a problem with alcohol’, wants 2 years in jail

Semyon Varlamov continues to get support back in Russia. This banner from a CSK/VVS Samara game – the team is from Varlamov's hometown – reads, “the truth is for Varlamov!”

Evgeniya Vavrinyuk, the alleged victim of domestic violence that led to the arrest of the Colorado Avalanche goalie, gave a Skype interview with Life News on Wednesday. Some highlights:

• She is very anxious, takes medication to calm down. Overall, she’s a little bit confused.

• Asked to show bruises and cuts: [turns to her attorney and his wife (who originally translated the Denver Post interview)] “My attorney tells me not to do it, because the police has all the pictures.”

• Why did this happen?

“He has a problem with alcohol. I’m not saying he drinks often, but when he has a day off, he drinks a lot. And when he drinks too much, he becomes aggressive and something goes wrong with his head.” [at 1:37]

• How much did he drink? Her attorney (outside the camera shot) says “two cases” before she can even start answering. Claims Varlamov and a friend drunk beer from 2 p.m. Claims then went to a Halloween party, where he kept drinking beer.

“I even have a video that I can send [that shows] what condition Semyon was in at 10 p.m., so you would imagine the condition he was in at 10pm and the condition he was in a 6 p.m. [I think she meant am] after he kept drinking.” [2:30 or so]

• Claims Varlamov kicked her out after she threatened to go to the police because he had beat her earlier. She is now living with her attorney and his wife. Claims Varlamov threw away her belongings and blocked her debit/credit card leaving her “with no money for a bottle of water.”

“My mother was against our relationship with Semyon. She talked to him on a cellphone more than once when there were beatings. She asked him ‘why are you doing this?’ And when I flew to America again, I didn’t tell my mother that I was in the States. Especially [that I was] with him” [at 6:30]

• Asked about mutual friends and what side they are on, said: “There are. There are girls, there are boys. Of course all the girls, all the club players are writing me, are supporting me…. Many people knew about these scandals, about these beatings, and everyone is supporting me, sending me text messages ‘be strong, be strong!’” [at 8:50]

“Imagine if your child got beat up. Or your mother was beaten. And you are defending this person, this tyrant actually. He is a tyrant of a person. When drunk he is inadequate. If needed, I can send the video [showing] the condition he was in at the time. I have it.” [at 9:47]

• Is she planning to file a civil suit for mental and physical harm caused? “Perhaps for the harm to the health, yes. But my main goal is for the person to answer in accordance with the law. And for the court to prove that he is guilty.” [at 10:30]

• He is facing two to six years in prison if convicted. Is this fair?

“You know, I lived through a lot, and I forgave a lot of things to this person. Sometimes the beatings I had were so blue, all blue, like hematomas, that I cried and there was nothing I could do. I want him to answer for all of his beatings. For all of them. I think two years would be good for him to sit [behind bars]. Let him think, you know? Because when all of this was happening and I was crying, when I was talking, he was saying ‘Who are you? I am a star. And I a player of the national team, the NHL.’ He was tearing his T-shirts and yelled ‘I am a World Champion! And who are you?’” [at 10:50]

• Why didn’t she leave? She says she loved him and tolerated it. She says she even has tattoos with his name on her body.

• Do you still love him? [after a long pause] “Probably not anymore.” [at 12:32]

“When I texted him ‘Semyon, I am with my attorney. My attorney’s name is so-so. Here is his number. Make it happen that your attorney gets in touch with my attorney.’ To which he replied ‘There are some of your things left, where could these be passed on to you?’ I wrote to him that all questions will be resolved by my attorney. ‘Have your attorney call mine.’ So, he didn’t believe to the end that I went to the police. And then he called me at night asking…sending text messages ‘Where are you? Should I reserve a hotel for you?’ Maybe somehow he wanted to hush it, but I firmly decided [to go to the police].” [at 12:50]

• Did he ask for forgiveness? “You know, when I woke up in the morning I was waiting for his forgiveness. Perhaps, if he would have held me and said ‘Forgive me! What have I done? I did it again!’ I would have forgiven him again.” [at 15:10]

• Would she take a lie detector test? “I consent! But, if it happens in America.” [at 15:45]

“Everyone is supporting him because he is a star, because he is a champion. Understand? I don’t need the dirty PR. I am a young girl, defenseless. I don’t have cool relatives. I don’t have big people. I took this step because I was tired of tolerating this. I was tired! I want everyone to know what kind of a person he is! Everyone here chants ‘Varly! Varly! Valry! Varly is the best!’ Let them know now what it is like.” [at 17:13]

• Her attorney and his wife jump in to give more direction before finally telling her to stop the interview [at 18:05]

Richard Sherman on facing Roddy White: ‘What challenge?’

Now that Roddy White has been cleared to play for the Atlanta Falcons this Sunday, he and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman can play out their TV feud in real life.

White and Sherman got into it this offseason on NFL Network, with the gist of the argument being that Sherman thought White was a product of the Falcons' system and White saying that Sherman yapped his way into a Pro Bowl.

So when Sherman was asked this week about facing White, returning from a hindering high ankle sprain, Sherman downplayed the "challenge" at hand, per the Seattle Times.

"What challenge?" Sherman asked.

Ah, Richard. Brevity is, indeed, the soul of wit.

The two faced off in the divisional playoffs a year ago, and White and the Falcons had the last laugh as they moved onto the NFC championship with a 30-28 victory, staving of a massive comeback by Seattle. But Sherman appears to have a short memory on the matter, as it relates to this game in Atlanta on Sunday, not drawing any additional motivation from January's result.

"No," Sherman said, "We're an 8-1 ballclub, they're a 2-6 ballclub. Facts."

We'll wait to hear what White says in response. It's going to be fun to watch these two lock horns this week.

Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano play basketball like seals

Because football is pretty easy for them, Barcelona had a basketball hoop at their Friday training session. And since Lionel Messi can't dunk, he and Javier Mascherano demonstrated how to score a basket using only their heads. Something their teammates had a bit of trouble attempting to do themselves.

Barcelona's official YouTube account goes a little far in labeling the clip "SPECTACULAR." It would've been if Dikembe Mutombo appeared out of nowhere to block Messi's shot and said, "Not in my house! Hahahahaha!"

Yes, Camping World Truck Series practice Thursday night was eventful.

Bubba Wallace collided with Chad Frewaldt on Thursday evening and Wallace confronted Frewaldt after exiting his truck. He reached into Frewaldt's truck at least twice as the two exchanged words before Wallace walked away.

NASCAR said that there would be no penalties from the confrontation.

Wallace and Frewaldt were entering turn three when Frewaldt's right front made contact with Wallace's left rear and they both went into the wall. Wallace obviously felt that Frewaldt didn't yield to him, and if you look at the replay, it's hard not to side with him. Frewaldt's truck does not stay glued to the inside yellow line.

Wallace will go to a backup truck after the crash.

VOD: Ole Miss head coach Huge Freeze gave an awesome pre-game speech on Homecoming

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Ole Miss is coming off a bye week that followed a homecoming matchup with Idaho on October 26. Idaho has won just four games since 2011, so they could be looked at as an automatic win thrown in the middle of the Rebels’ tough SEC schedule. It would be easy for the Ole Miss players to lessen their intensity and overlook Idaho, but coach Huge Freeze would not allow that.

The methods coaches use to inspire and motivate their players on a week-to-week basis is fascinating to me, and in the digital age, fans of college football are often lucky to get some behind the scenes looks into the locker room of their favorite team.

Cameras were rolling in the Ole Miss locker room that day and invoking Joe DiMaggio, Freeze’s message to his team was simple.

“Joe Dimaggio, the great Yankees baseball player, what he was known for mostly was his passion for playing. And he’s asked, ‘why do you play so hard? We’re on the road in front of 10,000 people. You’re not at Yankee Stadium in front of 60,000,’” Freeze began.

Raising his voice, Freeze continued, “and his comment was: it may be the only time someone sees Joe DiMaggio play. Tonight might be the only night someone in those stands sees you play.”

His team responded in style, winning 59-14, to improve to 5-3 on the season. The Rebels host Arkansas (3-6) Saturday at home.

The NBA’s apparent Christmas Day team jerseys are predictably terrible (Photos)

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

The special jerseys the NBA debuted for its games on Christmas last year were odd, and possibly off-putting to some, but at least they looked like an attempt to modify a jersey.

This year’s apparent batch, as unearthed by Brian Erni at SNY Nets (after scoping out Ebay) on Thursday and eventually “confirmed” (seriously, they’re jerseys) by Uni Watch’s Paul Lukas, don’t give off the same vibe. They look like shirts, with sleeves, shirts that can’t even be bothered to identify the town each team is supposed to represent with their play.

Take a look at what the Laker and Heat fans will be annoying you with for the next year or so:

[Yahoo Sports Fantasy Basketball is open for business]

The NBA has even dragged the “aw, shucks” feel-good team of the decade, your Oklahoma City Thunder, into their particular War on Christmas:

Frankly, the jerseys speak for themselves. And though the NBA will be playing in its eighth week by Christmas day, this batch of games is supposed to be a special showcase for the league – a re-introduction to those otherwise occupied with watching men in helmets giving each other brain dementia. Why the NBA wouldn’t want its players feeling comfortable with the jerseys they’ve been working in for the last two months plus exhibition season is beyond me.

Wait, no. It’s not beyond me. The NBA will sell a ton of these things. To absolutely nobody that would want to share a court, bleacher row, dinner party or car ride with.

Season’s greetings, revenue streams!

Girls basketball coach is fired over Facebook photo while her football coach fiance escapes serious discipline

Baylor receiver Tevin Reese injures wrist, will miss rest of regular season

Baylor put on an impressive all-around display Thursday night in its dominating victory over Oklahoma, but it came at a price.

Tevin Reese, the team’s second-leading receiver, suffered a dislocated right wrist in the first half of the game and will miss the rest of the regular season. Reese came out for the second half with his arm in a sling and Baylor head coach Art Briles confirmed the injury after the game, but said that Reese could return for a bowl game.

Reese leads the Bears with 25 yards per catch and is second on the team with 33 receptions, 824 yards and eight touchdowns.

The undefeated Bears are currently tied with Texas atop the Big 12 standings with four games remaining on the schedule.

There are some other good shots, like Griffey escorting his mom to throw the first pitch at the Kingdome, and one of him in a Bellingham (Wash.) Mariners uniform. That was his first professional team. He had an OPS of 1.049 at age 17.

DTotD: St. Etienne’s Kurt Zouma given 10-match ban for breaking opponent’s leg

St. Etienne centre-back Kurt Zouma has been on tremendous form of late, forming the backbone of Les Verts defence. The Ligue 1 side, however, will be without his services for a few months as the LFP (the French football association) have handed him a 10-match ban for a leg-breaking foul during his side's goalless visit to Sochaux last weekend.

In the 27th minute of Saturday's match, Zouma flew in with a tackle on Sochaux midfielder Thomas Guerbert, which fractured his right fibula and tibia, as well as dislocating his ankle. According to foot-national.com, Guerbert remained in hospital until Tuesday morning.

To be fair to Zouma, he did win the ball, but the virtues of the challenge are probably negated by the fact that he might have ended his opponent's career. The look of shock on Guerbert's face when he realizes what happened is terrifying and heartbreaking at the same time:

The LFP set a precedent for punishing tough-tacklers in March when Nice's Valentin Eysseric was forced to sit out for 11 matches following his bone-crunching slide on Zouma's St. Etienne teammate Jérémy Clément.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.

Rapid React: Redskins vs. Vikings

In an entertaining game that totaled 61 points (despite just six in the final quarter), the Vikings pulled off an impressive comeback, scoring the last 20 points during the team’s first win in the United States this season (a fact Brad Nessler really wanted us to know). The two playoff teams from last season now have a combined record of 5-13 on the year. Washington entered having allowed the second-most fantasy points to opposing QBs while Minnesota came in ceding the third most, so it wasn’t exactly surprising to see a shootout.

After struggling for most of the season, Robert Griffin played well Thursday night (albeit against a favorable opponent). He posted a 3:0 TD:INT ratio and a 114.8 QB Rating and has now gotten 8.3 YPA over the past two weeks while also gaining 44 yards on seven carries Thursday. But he took numerous hard hits and was relentlessly hurried. He hasn’t in any way changed his style of play coming off knee surgery, and while that makes him so fun to watch, Griffin remains a pretty big injury risk, although I hope I’m wrong…Alfred Morris was highly impressive, running for 139 yards on 26 carries (5.3 YPC), although he continues to frustrate fantasy owners when it comes to reaching the end zone. Of course, that seems silly since he’s on pace to score nine times, but he had 13 TDs last year, and his five this season are two fewer than teammates Roy Helu and Darrel Young combined despite him getting 111 more rushing attempts and being very successful at the goal line last year. Still, it’s hard to complain about Morris, who leads all running backs with a 5.2 YPC mark in 2013.

Pierre Garcon had another big game, getting 119 yards on 10 targets while scoring a touchdown for the first time since Week 4. The TDs have been disappointing, but Garcon is on pace to finish with 108 catches and 1,428 receiving yards and remains one of the most targeted receivers in all of football. And he continues to have highlight worthy plays every week, with the latest being this one. What a combination of speed and power…Jordan Reed had 62 yards receiving and a touchdown and has seen 37 targets over the past four games. Jimmy Graham, Rob Gronkowski, Vernon Davis and Julius Thomas are the only tight ends I’d rather own than Reed moving forward, and just the first two are clear cut.

While there’s an argument to be made questioning why Minnesota isn’t playing Josh Freeman right now, Christian Ponder completed 81.0 percent of his passes and got 8.3 YPA before departing with an injury after narrowly falling short of a touchdown on a rushing attempt (he was also lucky his fumble didn’t result in a touchback). And even then, Matt Cassel entered the game instead of Freeman (since the latter was inactive). It’s unclear why the team took a flier in the first place. Cassel was also competent, so it’s hard to underestimate just how vulnerable this Washington secondary is…John Carlson hauled in all seven of his targets for 98 yards and a score. For those who were calling him a nice sleeper this week (I unfortunately, wasn’t one of them), well played.

It’s clear now Adrian Peterson had previously been dealing with a debilitating (and underreported) hamstring injury he’s now recovered from. After totaling 150 rushing yards and one score over his previous three contests, AD has rushed for 215 yards and three touchdowns over the past two games. But forget the stats, Peterson just plain looks better (and by better I mean amazing), as he followed up last week’s ridiculous TD run with a number of other highlight worthy plays Thursday night. With LeSean McCoy’s lack of touchdowns and Jamaal Charles’ worrisome workload, Peterson is back atop my fantasy RB rankings.

I saw no reason why Washington didn’t go for it on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line on its opening drive, which was only exasperated when the Vikings started their next drive on the 35-yard line (in general, 15 yards equals a point). In other words, Washington might have been better off (because a teams’ playbook shrinks badly when faced at their own one) going for it and NOT getting the touchdown than making the field goal (and that’s not even accounting for the fact that the ensuing short field resulted in a Minny TD drive). But this has been par for the course with Mike Shanahan, as he’s one of the least aggressive coaches in football these days (and no, his attempted fake punt in the third quarter doesn’t help his cause since it was such a disaster in every way)…Not to pile on, but why did Washington spike the ball with 25 seconds left on Minnesota’s eight yard line with a timeout left in the second quarter? Run a play! Sure, they scored a TD two plays later, but if they hadn’t there would have still been 10 seconds remaining! This isn’t rocket science.

Speaking of clock strategy, the Vikings did something that raised a lot of questions late in the fourth quarter, when they called a timeout up 34-27 when Washington (who were without timeouts) had 2nd-and-goal. But I actually kind of agreed with this (Greg Jennings most definitely did not), as Washington was clearly more worried about downs than time here. Moreover, with Washington terrified of Cordarrelle Patterson and constantly utilizing squib kicks that resulted in an average field position start (after kickoffs) at the 28-yard line, it made even more sense to preserve time for a possible field goal attempt should Washington have scored a touchdown.

Bakersfield Condors’ Gettysburg Address jerseys are historically amazing (Photos)

Condors The ever-inventive Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL – who previously brought you Charlie Sheen Night and your chance to win your own gravesite – have decided to honor the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address with commemorative jerseys on Sunday, against the Stockton Thunder.

To answer your next question: Yes, every variation of the “four score” joke has already been made …

The Condors released a sketch of the jerseys earlier this week, but here they are in all of their patriotic splendor, as modeled by Bakersfield defenseman Joe Marciano and forward Cameron Abney. Here’s Marciano with the front:

Condors The back:

Condors And some extra detail on the back of the sweater ...

... which includes the actual text of the Gettysburg Address along with a battle between Union and Confederate soldiers. And what better way to honor their memories than by placing them under one’s buttocks on the player bench, right?

Speaking of cheeky things, the Condors have the following ready to publish in their Sunday game program:

Four years and a dozen more ago, Jonathan Fleisig brought forth on this city, a new hockey team, conceived in family entertainment, and dedicated to the proposition that the greatest game on Earth could succeed in Kern County.

Now, we are engaged in a great battle with rivals throughout the West, testing whether Condorstown or any Condorstown so awesome and so passionate, can long endure. We are met on the great sheet of ice of that battle.

We have come here today to dedicate the game today to those who have played here and reassure our commitment to this community by raising money for the Bakersfield ARC, coats for the Bakersfield Mission, and honoring our military with free tickets. It is altogether fitting and proper that we, as Condorstown, should do this.

And that hockey team, of Condorstown, by Condorstown, and for Condorstown, shall not perish from this Earth.

As Honest Abe said: “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”

And what they did here is put a stovepipe hat on a cartoon bird. So say we all…

Head to the Condors' site for more information, and thanks to the team for the images.
