Ole Miss is coming off a bye week that followed a homecoming matchup with Idaho on October 26. Idaho has won just four games since 2011, so they could be looked at as an automatic win thrown in the middle of the Rebels’ tough SEC schedule. It would be easy for the Ole Miss players to lessen their intensity and overlook Idaho, but coach Huge Freeze would not allow that.
The methods coaches use to inspire and motivate their players on a week-to-week basis is fascinating to me, and in the digital age, fans of college football are often lucky to get some behind the scenes looks into the locker room of their favorite team.
Cameras were rolling in the Ole Miss locker room that day and invoking Joe DiMaggio, Freeze’s message to his team was simple.
“Joe Dimaggio, the great Yankees baseball player, what he was known for mostly was his passion for playing. And he’s asked, ‘why do you play so hard? We’re on the road in front of 10,000 people. You’re not at Yankee Stadium in front of 60,000,’” Freeze began.
Raising his voice, Freeze continued, “and his comment was: it may be the only time someone sees Joe DiMaggio play. Tonight might be the only night someone in those stands sees you play.”
His team responded in style, winning 59-14, to improve to 5-3 on the season. The Rebels host Arkansas (3-6) Saturday at home.
