This is the hardest working halfback pass you’ll ever see

A halfback option pass is supposed to be a chance for the back to run less than he would if he turned the ball upfield. Apparently no one told Todd Edwards.

Edwards, a star halfback for Buckhannon-Upshur High (Buckhannon, W. Va.) produced one of the most meandering and inventive halfback passes in recent memory, if not ever, during his team's 50-28 victory against Preston High (Preston, W. Va.).

As brought to Prep Rally's attention by our friends at MaxPreps, the two West Virginia squads were playing in front of fairly desolate stands with both teams mired in losing seasons when Edwards was handed the ball on one snap with the idea that he could choose whether to tuck the ball and run downfield or pull up and lob a deep pass.

He rolled right with the intention of finding a receiver, only all of his targets were blanketed by defenders. Before Edwards had a chance to try and scamper for a few yards, the Preston defensive line had reached him in the backfield. Refusing to be dropped for a loss, Edwards instead retreated even farther into the backfield and cut all the way back across the field, running from the right sideline to the left.

By the time he reached the left hash of the field, he had bought enough time for a receiver deep on the right to free himself. Edwards heaved a pass as far as he could throw it, and it landed right in the hands of wide receiver Dillon Gaudet, who pulled in the catch and collapsed backwards into the end zone.

The score was easily the most unlikely of Buckhannon-Upshur's touchdowns of the season, and left the team with a memorable cap to a tough, 3-7 season.
