Eintracht Braunschweig fans prank Hannover 96 with scarf-wearing pig ahead of derby match

Newly promoted Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig share a fierce rivalry with Hannover 96. Separate divisions have kept the Lower Saxony teams apart for the past 37 years, but Hannover are set to host their old foes on Friday evening.

Ahead of their first bout since the 1975/76 season, Braunschweig have taken the initiative in terms of increasing the hostility by releasing a pig onto the streets of Hanover, complete with a scarf and a giant '96' painted on its side. Reuters reports:

Hanover police were called into action ahead of Friday's Lower Saxony derby between Hanover 96 and Eintracht Braunschweig, picking up a pig sporting a Hanover 96 scarf in the city center as tempers between fans rose, they said on Thursday.

With 96 written on one side and a green scarf around its neck, the pig was spotted wandering through the city on Wednesday night.

Police have transferred the pig to a shelter, but hopefully not before doing the "curly, straight, curly, straight" bit with its tail, à la Homer Simpson.

While the porky prank provider had '96' painted on one side, 101GG note that it had the number '1' drawn on the other. It is thought to be a reference to former 96 goalkeeper Robert Enke, who committed suicide in November 2009:

Keeping things morbid, Hanover fans have reciprocated the prank by placing yellow crosses around Braunschweig:

It's going to be a fun match on Friday.
