Beard update: David Ortiz, Shane Victorino, Bullpen Cop and one lucky Red Sox fan will shave on Monday

USATSI_7502395 (1) It seems the Boston Red Sox have this all backwards. First, several members of their team gave up shaving all together for several months leading up to their World Series clinching victory at Fenway Park on Wednesday night. Now, with “No Shave November” just getting underway, some members of the team are planning on doing just that — shaving.

The big day for two of Boston’s biggest stars will come on Monday. However, as Hardball Talk tells us, there will be a cool twist involved. Joining Ortiz and Victorino will be the most famous bullpen cop in the game’s history, Boston Police Officer Steve Horgan, as well as “one lucky fan” who will be selected to join them.

Here's more from Forbes:

On Monday morning in the Gillette World Shaving Headquarters lobby, World Series MVP David Ortiz, outfielder Shane Victorino, and famed bearded bullpen Officer Steve Horgan who was seen raising his hands when Ortiz smacked his grand-slam in the ALCS as Tigers outfielder Torii Hunter went crashing legs up over the wall, will shave their beards off with one lucky fan. Whether the beards act like Samson’s hair and Victorino and Ortiz are rendered powerless will have to be seen in 2014.

A Gillette press release adds:

Gillette is helping Ortiz and Victorino feel their best with well-deserved shaves. The hometown heroes will start their offseason as champions well groomed and shaved.

Sounds like a fun concept and some good promotion for Gillette. There are no further details at this time, but one would have to believe they'll try to get a charity or two involved and help raise money along the way.

As for other bearded Red Sox, well, only catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is on record stating his beard is here to stay. Others are on the fence, with some looking into charity opportunities before making the final call. We're sure some wives, fiancees, girlfriends and even mothers will have some say as well, so the fur may start flying soon.
