Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio was officially named the team’s interim head coach, according to numerous reports.

Del Rio is stepping in for coach John Fox, who will have heart valve replacement surgery this week in Charlotte, N.C. He was taken to a local hospital after feeling light-headed this past Saturday, and after testing and observation, doctors determined Fox needed an aortic heart valve replacement. The coach is expected to miss between six to eight weeks.

Fox led the Broncos to a 28-12 record in 2½ seasons before his heart issues flared up Saturday.

Del Rio was Fox's defensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers in 2002 before he became Jacksonville's head coach. He posted a 69-73 record with the Jaguars from 2003 until 2011 before he was eventually fired.

Denver was on a bye during Week 9 and will play against the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
