Report: USC has interviewed former Bears coach Lovie Smith

USC’s coaching search is underway and one of the first phone calls athletic director Pat Haden reportedly made was to former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith.

According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the university has already interviewed Smith, has Washington coach Steve Sarkisian on its radar and would ultimately love to hire current ESPN analyst Jon Gruden.

Early last month Smith's son, who serves as his agent, denied a report that an interview with USC had taken place at that time, but, according to a source, the school has spoken with Smith. USC is not commenting on the process.

Sources said that University of Washington coach Steve Sarkisian was well positioned to land that position, though a recent three-game losing streak may have cooled his star some. Gruden, if he returns to the sidelines from the broadcast booth, would most likely do so at the pro level.

Smith was the coach of the Bears from 2004-2012. He reached the Super Bowl in 2006 and was 81-63 before being fired last season.

USC is a good job – one of the top jobs in all of college football – and since the Trojans fired Lane Kiffin midseason, they have time to evaluate and court their best option, their dream option.

And what about Ed Orgeron? He’s 3-1 since taking over for Kiffin and just led the Trojans to their first win at Oregon State since 2004. Is he a serious candidate now?
