Four straight Manchester United wins have quieted criticism of new manager David Moyes (for now), but just to remind the Premier League champions' fans that it could've been worse comes Sven-Goran Eriksson's new autobiography. In the book, the current Guanghzou R&F manager (that's in China) confirms old rumors that he was set to take over as boss of Man United when Sir Alex Ferguson was originally set to retire back in 2002 when Eriksson was just over a year into his stint as England manager.

Writing in his autobiography Sven: My Story, which is being serialised in the Mail on Sunday, Eriksson disclosed: “I knew it would be tricky. I had a contract with England until the 2006 World Cup and I would be severely criticised if I broke that contract. But this was an opportunity to manage Manchester United.
A contract was signed — I was United’s new manager.”
Eriksson revealed that the agent Pini Zahavi still has in his office the contract stating Eriksson would be United’s new manager.
Of course, instead of retiring in 2002, Ferguson changed his mind and stayed on to win six more Premier League titles, a fifth FA Cup and a second Champions League title. Eriksson, meanwhile, kept the England job until 2006 before brief periods at Man City, Mexico, Notts County (as director of football), the Ivory Coast, Leicester City, Thai club BEC Tero (as technical director), UAE club Al Nasr (as technical director) and finally his current stop in China.
So regardless of who Man United have now, at least they didn't get Sven in 2002.
