Missouri Southern State University assistant coach Derek Moore was shot Friday as he was leaving a Joplin, Mo. movie theater. He later died at the hospital from his injuries.

The school has canceled its weekend Homecoming activities as a result of the tragic incident. The team’s game against Lindenwood has been postponed.

“We are stunned and deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our prayers are with Derek’s family,” MSSU interim President Alan Marble said in a statement. “We are ensuring that our employees and students have the emotional support they need during this difficult time.”

In his first year on the MSSU coaching staff, Moore, 37, coached the team’s offensive line. He previously spent three seasons at Western Illinois University.

“Derek was new to Missouri Southern but he was embraced by our campus and community,” head coach Daryl Daye said in a statement. “He was a very likeable person who always had a smile on his face and made friends easily with our staff and players. This is an unspeakable loss for the MSSU athletics family.

According to police, a 39-year-old suspect was arrested shortly after the shooting and is being held at the Joplin City Jail on a 24-hour hold pending formal charges. According to the Joplin Globe, police have indicated that they believe the incident was targeted, not random.
