After one period of play between the Ottawa Senators and the Dallas Stars, the Senators trailed 1-0 and were on pace to surrender 57 shots against for the second straight game. It had some wondering if they were witnessing rock bottom for the team many thought was going to be an Eastern Conference contender.
Nah, said Sens' defenseman Mark Borowiecki, this is rock bottom. And then he turned and backhanded the puck past Craig Anderson and into his own goal.
Poor Anderson. Not only are the Senators doing very little to curb the amount of shots he's facing -- now they're taking those shots too. He could probably use a little more help, is what I'm saying.
Antoine Roussel would get credit for the goal, even though he really just deserved an assist. Beauty of a centering pass, and some great quick mitts by Borowiecki to tuck that one past Anderson.
But don't feel too bad for Borowiecki. While the goal gave the Stars a 3-2 lead early in the third just after the Senators had worked so hard to tie the game up before the second intermission , Bobby Ryan was able to get it back late in the third.
Plus, Borowiecki went back to the bench and was immediately consoled by Chris Phillips, who knows a thing or two about putting an own-goal behind you after you've put it behind your goalie. Phillips scored one we ranked as the 15th-worst own-goal of all-time. Of all-time.
And heck, at least Borowiecki's blunder didn't come in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. That would have been much worse.
