BCS Standings: Florida State is back at No. 2 ... for now

But before Tallahassee starts celebrating, know that this move back to No. 2 in the BCS standings will probably be temporary like it was when the standings began two weeks ago.

Florida State had an impressive 41-14 win over then-No. 7 Miami. It was good enough to earn the Seminoles votes in the polls and move them to No. 1 in the overall computer ratings component of the BCS standings.

The Seminoles also moved within .0272 points of Alabama for the No. 1 spot.

But the Tide didn’t play this past weekend and neither did the Ducks. Both teams are preparing for important games against No. 13 LSU and No. 5 Stanford, respectively.

If Alabama and Oregon win, the Seminoles likely will be bumped back to No. 3.

The problem for Florida State is that its best opponents are now behind it. The Seminoles don’t play a team with a winning record through the end of the regular season. Oregon doesn’t play a team with a losing record and the only team in danger of falling into that category is a Utah squad the derailed Stanford's undefeated season a couple weeks ago.

There’s no disputing Florida State deserves to be in the conversation. They way the Seminoles have dismantled ranked Clemson and Miami teams have been amazing to watch. Redshirt freshman quarterback Jameis Winston has had a season worthy of a Heisman Trophy. But as we all know, in college football championships are won and lost in November. If Alabama and Oregon win out, the national championship game will likely be played between the two of them. Of course, both teams know the sting of a November defeat as well.

So, Florida State must sit, watch, wait and hope for Alabama and/or Oregon to slip or, despite the Seminoles best efforts, they’ll be on the outside looking in.

A couple other notes from the BCS standings:

• Ohio State continues to curse its Big Ten brethren. For the second consecutive week, the Buckeyes had an impressive win against a Big Ten opponent and made up no ground in the BCS standings. In fact, Stanford or Baylor could pass Ohio State depending on the outcome of those team’s games this Thursday.

• No. 16 Fresno State has widened its gap on No. 18 Northern Illinois for the non-AQ berth in a BCS bowl. One of those teams must climb into the top 12 for an automatic berth, but also could earn a BCS bowl berth if they’re ranked ahead of a conference champion from an AQ conference.

• No. 22 Arizona State made its first appearance in the polls after defeating Washington State 55-21.
