Rivals.com five-star hoops recruit Tyler Davis ruled ineligible in Texas as a junior

One of the nation's best prep basketball juniors may be playing junior varsity this season.

Tyler Davis, a five-star recruit ranked 20th in the Class of 2015 by Rivals.com, was denied eligibility by a district committee after transferring to Texas' top-ranked basketball program over the summer, according to a Dallas Morning News report.

Pending his appeal, that leaves the 6-foot-9, 270-pound junior center with two options: Play for a basketball factory like Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep or Huntington (W.Va.) Prep this season or play JV ball for Plano (Texas) West and join the varsity as a senior.

Davis' former coach, Frisco (Texas) Liberty High's Marcus Eckert, was reportedly an instigator in this drama, alerting the University Interscholastic League that he believed a member of Davis' AAU team, the Texas Titans, recruited him to play for Plano West.

Plano West's basketball team features four other players from the Titans: Avery Johnson Jr. (son of the former San Antonio Spurs point guard), fellow top-50 Class of 2015 recruits D.J. Hogg and Mickey Mitchell, and elite football recruit Soso Jamabo.

The UIL does not allow transfers for athletic reasons and frowns upon student-athletes joining a high school team that features his summer league coach or teammates.

Still, Davis' mother, Yvette Rubio, insisted to the committee that she moved from an apartment in the Frisco school district to a home in the Plano area in order to gain more living space for her family and shorten her commute.

According to the Dallas Morning News report, Rubio told the committee: “I knew my lease was coming up in the summer, and I knew I wanted to move to a different place. I didn’t know where; I just knew I needed to get out of the apartment.”

Added Davis, who wishes he would've known all this before the school year began, "I can go anywhere, and still get offers, take my five officials, and hopefully make it to the league."
