Dallas Stars goalie Jack Campbell has a thing for American heroism.
He is one, in hockey terms, after backstopping the U.S. team to the gold medal in the 2010 World Junior Championship over Canada. But he also likes to honor them on his goalie masks, like his Navy SEALs motif from earlier this season.
Now, he’s opted for another American icon: President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, whose administration helped create the SEALs program in 1962.
From goalie mask artist Dave Gunnarsson, on his Facebook page:
“Jack Campbell wanted a very patriotic design, 100% American as he is… We wanted to do a patriotic design in a new way, we started to brainstorm. What can be more American than a President design, and more precise a tribute to the legendary American President John F Kennedy.
“It was very exciting to create this design and mix the Dallas Stars theme and colors with a worthy artwork of JFK. In the middle is JFK when he is working in The Oval Office. The closer you come the more details you will discover, it is a like a 2 in 1 design. Among all the details you will also find his most famous quoted speech, and also the USS John F. Kennedy, and for sure the Presidential seal. I just love to create details.”
Let’s just all be happy that Campbell and Gunnarsson didn’t take their American presidential mask cue from Steve Mason.
Serious question, though: Is a JFK mask above political reproach?
You’d figure someone in this toxic political environment sees this mask and goes apoplectic about his mistresses not being listed on the back or some nonsense. Lord knows there’d be a backlash if some goalie skated out with a Ronald Reagan mask. Mainly because he was the governor in a non-traditional market, of course.
