ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals finally figured out how to get David Ortiz out. Let him hit a long drive to the deepest part of Busch Stadium and hope an outfielder catches the ball. That was the formula for success in Game 5 of the World Series, when Ortiz flied out to Shane Robinson in center for the second out of the sixth inning.
The only problem: Ortiz had reached base a World Series record-tying nine straight times before that, including an RBI double in the first that put the Boston Red Sox on the board. Ortiz also singled in the fourth to tie Billy Hatcher's record of reaching safely nine straight times for the Cincinnati Reds, set in 1990.
Ortiz is batting 10 for 14 (.714) in the Series and has gotten on base in 13 of 18 trips overall. Ortiz is 19 for 42 (.452) in his World Series career, which is the best mark of anyone with at least 50 plate appearances in the Series.
Boston took a 3-1 lead in the seventh on a two-run double by David Ross. The best-of-seven Series is tied at two games apiece, with Game 6 and 7 (if necessary) headed back to Boston.
