When bats attack — Daniel Nava’s broken bat shard flys at his neck

ST. LOUIS — David Ortiz might not be the most dangerous weapon in the Boston Red Sox dugout.

That's because Daniel Nava's bat almost did some damage to his person in Monday's Game 5 of the World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox.

Nava was batting in the top of the fourth inning with Ortiz at first base. He connected with an Adam Wainwright pitch, breaking his bat and sending a shard toward his neck. Nava is playing in place of an injured Shane Victorino in right field. Last thing Red Sox manager John Farrell needs is for his other right fielder to get his neck sliced up. Seemed like Nava was OK though.

The other not-so-happy result for Nava? He hit into a double play to end the inning.

The Red Sox and Cardinals remain tied 1-1 in the sixth inning. David Ortiz had an RBI double in the first inning, then Matt Holliday homered for the Cards in the bottom of the fourth, right after the bat shards were flying.
