There are plenty of buzzer beating basketball shots every year, just as there are more than a few game-winning field goals as time ticks away in prep football games. What’s much more rare is a legitimate buzzer beating win in a soccer game.
That’s precisely what unfolded in an Ohio playoff match between Aurora High (Aurora, Ohio) and Hudson High (Hudson, Ohio). With the two teams tied at 1-1 and the final seconds ticking toward overtime, Aurora midfielder Trever Wendell launched an audacious 45-yard shot that rose like a missile to the top of the net, over the outstretched hand of leaping Hudson goalkeeper Charlie Sockol.
Game, set, match for Aurora, 2-1.
The shot was launched from just inside the 30-yard line on the Aurora football field, but the distance that the goal was set back from the outer edge of the end zone accounts for the strike’s official distance.
While there are remarkable things throughout this highlight, nothing can compare to the crowd literally counting down the seconds until the start of overtime as Wendell scraps for a loose ball and then launches his miraculous shot on goal.
According to the Hudson Hub Times, Aurora was worth the 2-1 victory, as the Greenmen outshot Hudson 6-1 in the district semifinal face-off. Of course, that advantage wouldn’t have meant anything without Wendell’s one-of-a-kind buzzer beater.
The Greenmen eventually fell to Solon High (Solon, Ohio) in the district title game, 4-0, but they never would have even been in the title match without Wendell's timely strike.
