His name has been whirling in trade talks for a few weeks now, especially with the Vikings failing to match anything close to their playoff performance of a year ago in a 1-6 start.
In addition, Allen might not want to be a Viking anymore. He's a free-agent-to-be, and Allen had some choice words for his defensive teammates Sunday night after their 44-31 loss to the Green Bay Packers that was not as close as the score indicated.
What's not clear is if Allen is trying to get traded. It certainly doesn't sound that way, or perhaps he's just putting on a good face publicly. According to VikingUpdate.com's Tim Yotter, he was not even thinking about the possibility as of last night.
“Honestly, I’m not even going to address it. I’m not going to speculate on something that I haven’t had a conversation about and I’m not going to speculate on something that hasn’t happened,” Allen said after the loss. “I cross all bridges when I get to them and right now I’m trying figure out a way to make this defense better. ...
“You know what? It’s not even something I’ve got to worry about right now. I got no control over that stuff. It is what it is."
The Vikings likely would ask for something in excess of a third-round pick knowing that, if Allen walked as a free agent next offseason, they'd get a third in return via a compensatory pick. The Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos are two 4-3 teams that could use some pass-rushing help where Allen could fit, but the Cowboys are in a tricky, tight salary-cap situation that could make a deal difficult for them.
