The college football world was shocked when Notre Dame star quarterback Everett Golson withdrew from school because of an academic violation after a remarkable redshirt freshman season. After months of speculation as to the specifics of the incident, Golson told Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples that he violated Notre Dame’s honor code by cheating on a test, leading to his dismissal.

“Basically I had poor judgment on a test. It wasn’t due to poor grades or anything like that,” Golson said.

Golson opted to return to South Bend with the hopes of re-enrolling at Notre Dame as opposed to playing for a junior college or transferring elsewhere. Golson expects the school will let him back in after he reapplies. Then he can rejoin the football team in 2014.

In 2012, Golson threw for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns and ran for six more while leading the Fighting Irish to an eventual National Championship loss to Alabama.
